NOTD – Spray Paint Ombre

I got my first request the other day from Chelsea and I was so happy that I finally had a legit reason to try out ombre nails.  I was always a little apprehensive because of the technique and picking the right colour family to create the blend.

To be honest I’m not entirely sure if this is a traditional ombre effect, as the gradient isn’t that subtle.  So I’ve called it Spray Paint Ombre because it sort of has that graffiti texture to it.

Creating this look was a lot easier than I thought it would be.  I needed a couple extra tools than usual (sponge and foil) but other than that, the application process was a breeze.

After using a basecoat, I applied two coats of Barry M *black*.  When that dried, I dipped a sponge into some Beauty UK *slate* which I had poured onto a piece of foil.  I then dabbed my nail randomly with the sponge, moving from the tip of the nail toward the base.  Once I got 2/3 of the way down the nail I stopped.  When this layer was dry, I used Revlon *charming* to dab onto the nail in the same way that I used *slate*, but this time I only dabbed about a quarter of the nail.

Although it was not was I was expecting, I’m quite happy with the outcome.  The ‘spray paint effect’ creates texture and gives it an urban feel, which I think works with the black.
